Guatamala Trip

From Dec 16th through Dec 21st, 1995 we went to Guatamala to look at birds and Mayan ruins. It was a hell of a lot of fun. Here are a lot of pictures from the trip in case you are thinking of going there as well. There are no bird pictures. In fact, I didn't notice any particularly interesting birds. The ruins were cool, though.

Hotel

We stayed in a very nice hotel and, Nancy, the owner of the hotel was our guide throughout the trip. The hotel came complete with monkey, anti-monkey guard dogs, parrot, a new pool and beautiful view of the lake.

City

The airport is near a town which is on an island in the lake. The town reminds me of European towns and it is a nice place to walk around.

Island

On another island in another lake there are "miniature" Myan ruins. They didn't seem very small to me, but I hadn't seen Tekal yet. The boat ride to the island through alligator infested lake water was the most terrifying part of the enitre week. The boat in the picture held 13 adults at once and barely stayed above water.

Next To Island

After the return boat trip, we were happy to be on solid ground again and we were happy to climb this very high ruin for a view of the surrounding countryside.

Tekal

This is an entire Mayan city. Only enough of the city was uncovered to provide tourists with about two full days of sightseeing.
