Das Wasser rauscht', das Wasser schwoll,
Ein Fischer saß daran,
Sah nach dem Angel ruhevoll,
Kühl bis ans Herz hinan.
Und wie er sitzt und wie er lauscht,
Teilt sich die Flut empor:
Aus dem bewegten Wasser rauscht
Ein feuchtes Weib hervor.

The water roared, the salty brine,
A fisherman sat with his pole,
Peacefully tending to his fishing line,
Cool, clean through to his soul.
And while he sat and listened,
The water formed a fissure;
Wading out of it glistened
A dripping female figure.

Sie sang zu ihm, sie sprach zu ihm:
"Was lockst du meine Brut
Mit Menschenwitz und Menschenlist
Hinauf in Todesglut?
Ach wüßtest du, wie's Fischlein ist
So wohlig auf dem Grund,
Du stiegst herunter, wie du bist,
Und würdest erst gesund.

"Why do you bait my little friends
With the ingenuity of your folk
Only to bring them to their ends?
Do you know what it is to be a fish,
You inhabitor of the land?
Come join us, if you wish,
We'll show you that it's grand.

Der Mond sich nicht im Meer?
Kehrt wellenatmend ihr Gesicht
Nicht doppelt schöner her?
Lockt dich der tiefe Himmel nicht,
Das feuchtverklärte Blau?
Lockt dich dein eigen Angesicht
Nicht her in ew'gen Tau?"

Doesn't the sun revive you,
Or the moon, as it does me?
And if reflected in the deep blue,
Don't they improve terrifically?
Doesn't this deep heaven entice you,
The wet, crystal clear blue?
Doesn't your reflected image draw you,
Into this eternal dew?

Und ward nicht mehr gesehn.

His desiring heart was on the line,
Like during a deep love's glow.

His willingness she did win
He followed where she led him,
And was never seen again.
